I hope this newsletter finds you all well and enjoying this streak of warm February weather! Here is what’s happening in Room 210 at Sippican School:
Before February break, the students took the Unit 4 assessment on decimals. We have started Unit 5, which focuses on operations with fractions. The students have been and will be learning to find common denominators, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, multiplying fractions by whole numbers, and multiplying fractions by fractions.
There is no Spelling this week. We are catching up on pretests for the rest of the year. Spelling will resume next week.
In Reading, we have wrapped up our unit on researching debatable issues. The students have written their position paper on their issue, and we are currently working group by group to debate our issue with classmates. We have started a nonfiction unit this week, in which the students are ultimately going to apply their knowledge from our nonfiction reading minilessons to inquiry projects that are going to have a Social Studies theme.
Classroom needs: Wipes, tissues, dry erase markers, plastic or paper cups
Also, several of the computer programs that the students work on in class on the Chrome Books require the use of earphones/headphones. If your child has a spare pair of headphones that they would like to bring to school and keep in the classroom, they are welcome to do so. An inexpensive pair can be purchased, for example, on Amazon for approximately seven or eight dollars. I can also place a class order; if you would like that, please send in $8.00 with your child to purchase their own set of headphones. Your child will bring them home at the end of the school year and will be able to use them in sixth grade.
